Rutland City Public Schools Board Welcomes new Superintendent

The Rutland City Public Board of School Commissioners is pleased to announce Pamela Reed as its next Superintendent.  Reed’s extensive experience within the school district as an educator and leader positions her well to serve the RCPS schools and communities.

Reed was hired after a thorough search that included input from the community, parents, faculty, and staff, including a community-wide survey. The fifteen-member search committee represented all stakeholder groups.  The results of the survey input guided the committee in its review of candidates both inside and outside of Vermont. Ultimately, the committee recommended two candidates to the RCPS Board.

Cathy Solsaa, Board Chair and member of the Search Committee had this to say, “On behalf of the School Board, we are thrilled that Pam has accepted the role of Superintendent of Rutland City Public Schools.  She is well-positioned to amplify and carry on the good work that we have been doing with Bill Olsen’s leadership. Additionally, Pam is a  perfect person to navigate the current landscape of public education in Vermont.”

Kim Peters, Rutland City Recreation Director, who served on the  Search Committee, shared, “I was honored to be involved in the Superintendent Search/Screening Committee for Rutland Public School.  The task of the committee was to interview candidates and provide two recommendations to the Board.  Throughout the process, I felt my input was valued and respected.  Pam Reed is an excellent choice for the community and I am excited to continue to work with her in the future."

Reed is the current Director of Student Support Services Equity and Inclusion for the Rutland City Public Schools. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the College of Saint Joseph and a Master of Arts degree from Vermont State University Castleton.  Her career has been centered in the Rutland region, beginning as a special educator and classroom teacher. Reed’s administrative experience includes serving as a director of student services and associate principal.  In addition to extensive community service in the greater Rutland area, Reed is active statewide, serving currently as the President of the Vermont Council of Special Educators, the statewide organization for Directors of Student Support Services.  In this capacity, Reed works with the Presidents of Vermont Superintendents Association, Vermont Principals Association, and Vermont Curriculum Directors Association in advocating for Vermont students at every level, including testimony to House and Senate Education committees.  Reed is also an internship supervisor with the VT Higher Education Collaborative and serves on the board of the Vermont Achievement Center.

Pam had this to say about her new role. “I am honored and humbled to serve as the Superintendent of Rutland City Public Schools. As a veteran educator and administrator in Rutland, I have had the privilege of witnessing the incredible children and families we serve and the dedication of our staff.”

Students are at the heart of every decision we make. By listening to their voices, ensuring equity in all we do, and working collaboratively with families, caregivers, and community partners, we can create an environment where every student feels valued, respected, and supported.

Our strategic plan is a roadmap to excellence. I am eager to continue our focus on enhancing teaching and learning, promoting wellness for students and staff, and ensuring our resources are allocated effectively to maximize impact.”

The RCPS Board unanimously approved Pamela Reed as the district’s next leader at its December 10 board meeting. Reed will begin her new role in the district on July 1, 2025.
